Eligibility
Candidates for the Alray Taylor Second Chance Scholarship must have:
- Graduated from a Boston public high school or a Boston charter high school, or received a GED after attending one of these schools;
- Applied to the scholarship within fifteen years of high school graduation or earning a GED;
- Enrolled and started a college, trade school, or vocational program after completing high school;
- Left, without completing, their educational program due to a range of family, personal or educational reasons;
- Have used their time away from their educational program productively, such as being involved in a variety of community, school and work activities;
In addition, in their application essays, the candidates must show:
- An intent and readiness to return to school, as determined through essays and an interview;
- A demonstrated need;
- A desire to make a meaningful contribution to their family, community, or larger society.
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate qualities such as integrity, strength of character, maturity, resolve, self-discipline, resilience, leadership and civic engagement.
This scholarship requires that you submit:
- A recommendation from a teacher, supervisor, coach, mentor, or other adult who knows you well
- A transcript from your most recent college or vocational school and/or a high school transcript
- Completion of the FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov)
Please start on these items while you are working on your online
application. Transcripts and recommendations must be postmarked by the
deadline date. Note: If you have difficulty getting an official
transcript, we will accept an unofficial version or a computer printout
of your college grades.
